Dr Denis Verwilghen - DipECVS
Denis Verwilghen graduated from the University of Ghent in 2003.He started of his career as an equine veterinarian in private practice in Ireland and the Netherlands before becoming resident in equine surgery at the University of Liege. In 2006 he defended a master in veterinary science degree on the subject of "Osteochondrosis and its relationship with IGF-I in the Horse". In 2009 he obtained a specialist diploma (DES) in Large animal Surgery from the University of Liege and in 2010 Denis successfully passed the exam of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. Denis then defended his PhD in Liege about OCD in horses. After spending some time in Sweden as head surgeon at the Equine Surgery Division of the University Animal Hospital in Uppsala, Denis and his wife Gaby, a ECEIM diplomate, moved back to Belgium and started a consultancy based equine medicine and surgery service. Denis interests lay in general soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. Denis has always ahd a special interest in equine dentistry and has been active both clinically as in teaching this aspect widely. Denis has a broad range of publications on various aspects of equine surgery with a particular interest in asepsis research, orthopaedic biomarkers and dentistry. Denis friends have never complained about his ability to produce a tasteful meal, though Denis’ wife is generally not impressed by the state of the kitchen after dinner, but you all know how medicine people are. Denis’ main hobbies are running and swimming though cannot remember himself when was the last time he has! Further Denis is a big fan of his son Thomas and enjoys changing diapers, but his wife will tell you again she can’t remember when he’s done it last ;)

Objectifs :
Het doel van deze cursus is om dierenartsen en hun praktijk voor te bereiden voor courante spoedpatienten en die patienten die een intensievere hospitalisatie vergen. Aangezien spoed- en intensieve patiënten vaak meerdere problemen hebben, zal in de plaats van de gebruikelijke aanpak waarbij elke lezing over een ander orgaanstelsel uitwijdt, een trapsgewijze opbouw geruikt worden voor deze reeks. Elke voordracht heeft daarbij tot doel om een ‘upgrade’ van de kennis, vaardigheden en de infrastructuur van de dierenarts te vormen.
De eerste lezing vertrekt in de virtuele wereld van een ‘gemiddelde’ kleine huisdierenpraktijk, waar de dierenarts één type infusievloeistof heeft, geen infusie- of spuitpompen heeft, geen bloeddrukmeting kan uitvoeren en voor de analgesie van zijn patiënten slechts de keuze heeft uit ketamine, lidocaine, alfa-2 agonisten, diazepam en één soort opioïde. Deze eerste lezing zal basisvragen aanpakken zoals: wat kan ik doen met mijn beperkte middelen om shock te diagnosticeren, hoe kan ik het trachten te behandelen, waar kan ik best in investeren, welke eerste hulp en initiële therapie kan ik mijn patiënten aanbieden, wanneer en hoe moet ik refereren, en bovenal: hoe behandel ik de intensieve zorgen patiënten die gehospitaliseerd worden.
Vanaf dit vertrekpunt wordt elke lezing iets ingewikkelder, met grotere diagnostische en therapeutische uitdagingen, maar steeds met het doel om de praktijkdierenarts de middelen aan te reiken om zich op dergelijke patiënten voor te bereiden. Het einddoel is daarbij dat elke dierenarts die deze lessenreeks volgt zich comfortabel voelt om zelfs de ergste spoed en intensieve zorgen patiënten over de vloer te krijgen, en een geode kennis heeft van bestaande opties om de optimale zorgen aan deze dieren aan te bieden. Alle voordrachten zullen gegeven worden aan de hand van klinische gevallen, waarbij een groot deel van de tijd ook geïnvesteerd zal worden in open discussies met de aanwezige dierenartsen. Om deze interactieve aanpak te kunnen garanderen zal daarom het aantal deelnemers ook gelimiteerd worden tot een maximum van 25 dierenartsen. Bij elke voordracht zullen ook de nodige flowcharts voorzien worden om de implementatie van nieuwe diagnostische en therapeutische protocols in uw praktijk te vereenvoudigen. Tenslotte zal vanaf het “tweede niveau” ook de mogelijkheid aangeboden worden om “huiswerk” te maken, waarbij u geconfronteerd zal worden met levensechte vragen en dilemma’s.

Kris graduated at Ghent University in 2002, where he subsequently performed an internship and a residency in internal medicine. During his residency he invested himself in the development of the ECC and blood bank at Ghent University. After completion of his residency he worked briefly in a referral practice in the Netherlands, before obtaining his diplomacy and moving to Liège University. Since October 2008 he is in charge of the emergency and critical service at Liège University, and is actively involved in the internship program and the training of residents in internal medicine. He concurrently completes a PhD on the effect of systemic inflammation on the cardiovascular system in emergency and critical care. He has performed externships at several European universities, and this year spent two months at the University of Pennsylvania in order to work on his research and get new ideas and insights for the further development of the emergency and critical care service in Liège.
Kris’s is author of research papers in endocrinology, haematology, nephrology and emergency and critical care, for which he has received international awards. Meanwhile he has become an active member of the EVECCS society, where he is currently vice-president, helping out in the foundation of a European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. So in summary, Kris considers himself a veterinarian with a big interest in emergency and critical care, and a great passion for teaching.

Dr Giovanna Bassu - DipECAR
Graduated from the veterinary school of Sassary (Sardegna, Italy). She spent her last year of study in the university of Liège at the department of small animal reproduction. She also did in Liège (1999-2000) an internship in farm animals. Then she joined Maisons Alfort (Paris-France) where she followed, after 1 year of practice, a residency in Small Animal Reproduction at the Veterinary School of Alfort. At the end of the Residency she joined another time Liège to work in the department of Small Animal Reproduction. Diplomate at the European College of Animal Reproduction since 2005, she works now in a private clinic in Brussels and in the laboratory of human andrology at Brugmann University Hospital.
Dr Géraldine Bolen - DipECVDI
Graduated as Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Liège in 2001. After an internship in Small Animal Clinique of the University of Liège, Géraldine joined the Diagnostic Imaging Section of the same institution. She obtained a diploma (diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies en Sciences Vétérinaires) in 2006 by research in MRI of the equine feet. She completed also a 3-year residency program in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging in Liège between 2004 and 2007. During this period, she did several externships in different universities of Switzerland, United States and England. In 2008, she was awarded, after examination, by the European Diploma in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging by the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (DipECVDI). She defended her PhD thesis “Contribution to the study of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the equine foot: effects on the image of isolated limbs preservation, of magnetic field, of sequences and of section planes.” In september 2009. She is now senior lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging Section of the University of Liège.
Dr Valeria Busoni - PhD, DipECVDI
Born in Italy, Valeria graduated in Veterinary Medicine in Pisa (Italy) in 1993.
After a few months in the UK, she moved to France to train at the Equine Clinic of Alfort under the supervision of Professor Denoix. At the Veterinary School of Maisons Alfort she entered a residency program in diagnostic imaging under the supervision of Professor Begon. She obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging in 1999.
In 2004, she finished a PhD with a thesis on comparative imaging of the equine podotrochlear apparatus at the University of Liège (Belgium).
At the moment Valeria lives in Belgium and works as senior clinician at the Imaging Service of the Veterinary Faculty of Liège. Her main professional interests are equine ultrasonography and small animal abdominal ultrasound. Her main hobbies are travelling, yoga and hiking.
Valeria has been invited speaker in several international congresses. She is author of several publications in peer-reviewed journals, author of a book on small animal abdominal ultrasonography, author of a chapter on equine radiology in the 5th edition of “Veterinary radiology” edited by D.Thrall and co-author of the chapter “Imaging: ultrasonography of joints and synovia” in the book “Current techniques in equine surgery and lameness”.

Objectifs :
Naargelang de vordering van de opleiding zijn de deelnemers in staat om:
- een compleet en systematisch echografisch onderzoek te realiseren waarbij ze het geheel van de buikholte en de buikorganen onderzoeken
- de verschillende anatomische structuren die men tegenkomt tijdens een abdominale echografie te herkennen
- beelden te maken in de verschillende richtingen van ieder onderzocht orgaan
- het normale aspect van de anatomische echografische structuren te herkennen
- een afwijking die tijdens het echografisch onderzoek wordt vastgesteld op een systematische manier te analyseren met het doel om een differentiaal diagnose op te kunnen stellen
- de methode/aanpak te kennen die gevolgd zou moeten worden bij detectie van uitbreiding van een neoplasie
- de limieten te kennen van een abdominale echografie
- een gestructureerd verslag te kunnen opmaken van een abdominale echografie

Dr Giovanna Bassu - DipECAR
Graduated from the veterinary school of Sassary (Sardegna, Italy). She spent her last year of study in the university of Liège at the department of small animal reproduction. She also did in Liège (1999-2000) an internship in farm animals. Then she joined Maisons Alfort (Paris-France) where she followed, after 1 year of practice, a residency in Small Animal Reproduction at the Veterinary School of Alfort. At the end of the Residency she joined another time Liège to work in the department of Small Animal Reproduction. Diplomate at the European College of Animal Reproduction since 2005, she works now in a private clinic in Brussels and in the laboratory of human andrology at Brugmann University Hospital.

Dr Elke Schreurs - DipECVDI
Elke Schreurs graduated from the veterinary school of Ghent in 2003. She followed the rotating internship in Small Animal Veterinay Medicine in Ghent. Afterwards, in 2004, she started the residency of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI). This allowed her to attend conferences and to do several externships at other veterinary clinics and faculties. In 2009 she obtained the diploma of the ECVDI.
Since 2008 she has been working as an imager in several private practices in Belgium and France.
Dr Barbara Vandevelde - DipECVDI
Barbara graduated as veterinarian in 1999 at the university of Ghent in Belgium. After graduation she completed an internship at the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Bern in Switzerland, where she developed a great interest in medical imaging. In October 2000 she started her residency in Veterinary Medical Imaging at the University of Ghent and passed the exam of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI) in 2007. During her residency she did several externships and courses at different clinics in England and Switzerland such as The Animal Health Trust in Newmarket and The Royal College in London. Barbara did her research project on ultrasonography of the shoulder of the dog and evaluation of OCD lesions with ultrasound. After working an extra year at the university, she started to work in private practice. Currently she works at several referral clinics in Belgium and the Netherlands. Objectifs :
Het doel van deze cursus is om dierenartsen en hun praktijk voor te bereiden voor courante spoedpatienten en die patienten die een intensievere hospitalisatie vergen. Aangezien spoed- en intensieve patiënten vaak meerdere problemen hebben, zal in de plaats van de gebruikelijke aanpak waarbij elke lezing over een ander orgaanstelsel uitwijdt, een trapsgewijze opbouw geruikt worden voor deze reeks. Elke voordracht heeft daarbij tot doel om een ‘upgrade’ van de kennis, vaardigheden en de infrastructuur van de dierenarts te vormen.
De eerste lezing vertrekt in de virtuele wereld van een ‘gemiddelde’ kleine huisdierenpraktijk, waar de dierenarts één type infusievloeistof heeft, geen infusie- of spuitpompen heeft, geen bloeddrukmeting kan uitvoeren en voor de analgesie van zijn patiënten slechts de keuze heeft uit ketamine, lidocaine, alfa-2 agonisten, diazepam en één soort opioïde. Deze eerste lezing zal basisvragen aanpakken zoals: wat kan ik doen met mijn beperkte middelen om shock te diagnosticeren, hoe kan ik het trachten te behandelen, waar kan ik best in investeren, welke eerste hulp en initiële therapie kan ik mijn patiënten aanbieden, wanneer en hoe moet ik refereren, en bovenal: hoe behandel ik de intensieve zorgen patiënten die gehospitaliseerd worden.
Vanaf dit vertrekpunt wordt elke lezing iets ingewikkelder, met grotere diagnostische en therapeutische uitdagingen, maar steeds met het doel om de praktijkdierenarts de middelen aan te reiken om zich op dergelijke patiënten voor te bereiden. Het einddoel is daarbij dat elke dierenarts die deze lessenreeks volgt zich comfortabel voelt om zelfs de ergste spoed en intensieve zorgen patiënten over de vloer te krijgen, en een geode kennis heeft van bestaande opties om de optimale zorgen aan deze dieren aan te bieden. Alle voordrachten zullen gegeven worden aan de hand van klinische gevallen, waarbij een groot deel van de tijd ook geïnvesteerd zal worden in open discussies met de aanwezige dierenartsen. Om deze interactieve aanpak te kunnen garanderen zal daarom het aantal deelnemers ook gelimiteerd worden tot een maximum van 25 dierenartsen. Bij elke voordracht zullen ook de nodige flowcharts voorzien worden om de implementatie van nieuwe diagnostische en therapeutische protocols in uw praktijk te vereenvoudigen. Tenslotte zal vanaf het “tweede niveau” ook de mogelijkheid aangeboden worden om “huiswerk” te maken, waarbij u geconfronteerd zal worden met levensechte vragen en dilemma’s.

Dr Kris Gommeren - DipECVIM
Kris graduated at Ghent University in 2002, where he subsequently performed an internship and a residency in internal medicine. During his residency he invested himself in the development of the ECC and blood bank at Ghent University. After completion of his residency he worked briefly in a referral practice in the Netherlands, before obtaining his diplomacy and moving to Liège University. Since October 2008 he is in charge of the emergency and critical service at Liège University, and is actively involved in the internship program and the training of residents in internal medicine. He concurrently completes a PhD on the effect of systemic inflammation on the cardiovascular system in emergency and critical care. He has performed externships at several European universities, and this year spent two months at the University of Pennsylvania in order to work on his research and get new ideas and insights for the further development of the emergency and critical care service in Liège.
Kris’s is author of research papers in endocrinology, haematology, nephrology and emergency and critical care, for which he has received international awards. Meanwhile he has become an active member of the EVECCS society, where he is currently vice-president, helping out in the foundation of a European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. So in summary, Kris considers himself a veterinarian with a big interest in emergency and critical care, and a great passion for teaching.

Dr Michael Ross - Dip.ACVS, Professor of Surgery
Dr. Ross is a Professor of Surgery at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation from Cornell University’s New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1981, he completed a large animal internship program there. Dr. Ross then completed a 3-year large animal surgical residency program at New Bolton Center where he was appointed Lecturer in Surgery from 1985-1988, Assistant Professor of Surgery from 1988-1993, and Associate Professor of Surgery from 1993-1999. Dr. Ross became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1986 and is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Ross has broad clinical interests including equine gastrointestinal, respiratory, and musculoskeletal surgery, but in recent years has concentrated efforts in the area of orthopedic surgery with a particular interest in arthroscopic surgical techniques. Equine lameness diagnosis and management has always been a clinical focus, with a special emphasis in the Standardbred and Thoroughbred racehorse. Dr. Ross developed and is Director of the Nuclear Medicine Program at New Bolton Center and is the author of over 295 scientific papers, proceedings, abstracts and book chapters. Ross and Dyson’s new lameness textbook and companion CD, Diagnosis and Management of Lameness in the Horse, published December 2002 by WB Saunders (Elsevier Science), is the culmination of over 29 years of study and interest in clinical examination and management of the lame horse. Ross and Dyson were recognized by the Association of American Publishers for outstanding achievement in Professional and Scholarly Publishing (2003 award in the field of nursing and allied health).
